WATCH: Marina Abramovic Is Not The ‘Satanic’ Artist You Might Think She Is…

Most people don’t pay much interest in the art world.

So last week’s revelation of Hillary Clintons campaign manager John Podesta’s brother, Tony Podesta being involved in ‘spirit cooking’ caused plenty of eyebrow raising.

WikiLeaks released emails between Podesta and performance artist Marina Abramovic discussing his plans to participate in a ritual called ‘spirit cooking‘ and the possibility of him bringing brother John along too.

“Dear Tony,

I am so looking forward to the Spirit Cooking dinner at my place. Do you think you will be able to let me know if your brother is joining?

All my love,

Marina”

‘Spirit Cooking’ was a staged performance which was held at a number of museums around the world and consisted of mixing blood, semen and breast milk to smear on the walls as ‘graffiti’. However, many believe that ‘Spirit Cooking’ is a dark and evil dinner referred to in the emails, which includes the consumption of the blood, semen and milk in the name of ‘magick’.

The news of the ritual shocked many and the globally renowned artist was soon branded as some kind of ‘devil worshiper’.  Many speculated that Hillary’s staff were involved in satanic rituals and that she ‘probably’ participated in spirit cooking herself. (Although there is no proof of that.)

However, Marina has recently spoken to Art News about how the story has got completely out of control…

“I’m outraged, because this is taken completely out of my context… It was just a normal dinner… It was actually just a normal menu, which I call spirit cooking. There was no blood, no anything else. We just call things funny names, that’s all.”

So we did some digging on this legendary artist to find out more about her and it turns out Abramovic is very much honoured in the art world. Whilst she is known for work that focuses on pain, blood, and the relationship between the performer and the audience, there is a much deeper meaning behind everything Marina does.
